Q:  My 7-year-old dog scoots his butt on the ground to “clean his anal glands. Is that normal?
A:

Yes. If you don’t clean them out for your dog, than he will do it himself.

Anal glands are tiny perfume (putrid) factories that lie in the 4 o’clock and 7 o’clock position around the rectum. This is why dogs smell each other’s butt.  Well, these glands can fill up every 6 weeks. Some dogs do not like their anal glands full and will express it themselves when need be.

Q:  Is there any arthritis medication I can give my dog?
A:  There are a myriad of anti-arthritis medications your pet can use. Picking the right one depends on your pet, your vet and your pocket-book. One of my favorites is a product called meloxicam. Its safe, it works and its reasonably priced.

Q:  Is it "OK" if my cat eats the dog's food?
A:  No. Cats have strict dietary requirements like taurine, arginine, vitamin A, arachodonic acid and niacin. Dog food does not have these supplements in them. If your cat does not eat their own special formulated food, than they can have a myriad of health problems.

Q:  How can I tell if my dog has fleas?
A:  Obviously if you see small looking hip-hopping insects on your pet, its probably a flea. They like to hang out on your pet’s belly and around the base of the tail area. Fleas also will leave behind very tiny pepper looking fecal material on your pet’s coat. So even if you do not see the fleas, you will probably notice the flea droppings.

Q:  Why does my cat keep getting ear infections?
A:  If you have treated your cat multiple times for an infection, either you are treating with the wrong stuff or your cat may have a polyp in its ear. Either way, if the infection/problem keeps coming back, take your cat in ASAP!
